Roisin Derbis is a painter based in the Niagara region, known for her evocative oil paintings of skyscapes and natural scenes from home and world travels. Born into a family of artists in the village of Elora, she has been painting her entire life. Her inspiration roots from childhood stories of fairies in the garden and angels in the clouds. Now, she paints images inspired by the wonders of a moving sky, crashing waves and the sounds you hear while sitting quiet in nature.
Following a break from exhibiting, Roisin is re-emerging into the art scene with a collection that speaks to a profound connection to the outdoors and passionate concern for the environment. Her art is deeply inspired by a love of nature, aiming to evoke a sense of gratitude for the earth and the sky we all share.
She is a member of the St. Catharines Art Association and will be part of the first annual studio tour in the city this spring. Roisin currently has a piece on display at the Ontario Legislative assembly and is preparing for two upcoming group shows in Niagara in the coming months
My name is Roisin Derbis and I am a painter.
I bring my focus towards the sky and create landscapes in my own style.
I mainly work with oils but have experimented with watercolours and enjoy filling my sketch books. My paintings are a mix of palette knife and brush strokes, and I often mix the colours directly on the canvas. I find this gives it a depth as the picture evolves with the colour and textures I’ve created.
I mostly feel inspired by sky scapes as they are an ever-changing subject with as many moods as you and me. I like that the sky connects us. I think about family over seas and how they saw the same moon just a few hours before me. Or how a thunderstorm over Niagara will drop the same rain down on my sister in Nova Scotia not long after.
The sky is where we look for hope, to send a prayer to a loved one passed on, watch in wonder as it changes colours and toss up wishes to the stars. We breathe it, play in it, travel through it and share it. It’s extraordinary.
I live in the Niagara region with my husband, two daughters and our doodle.
